The CCSDS Space Link Extension (SLE) protocol is a set of standardized communication protocols developed by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS). The primary purpose of SLE protocols is to facilitate the efficient and reliable transfer of space mission data between ground stations and mission control centres, ensuring interoperability among various international space agencies and organizations.

Several years ago, we proudly released an open-source implementation of a Space Link Extension (SLE) Server on GitHub, offering the space community a valuable tool for facilitating efficient and reliable communication between ground stations and mission control centres. As the project has evolved, we’ve moved the codebase to GitLab to better manage its ongoing development and maintenance.

Key Updates

  • Codebase Cleanup: We have started a thorough maintenance activity to remove unused code, enhance the quality of the codebase, and prepare for the addition of new features. This will ensure a more streamlined and efficient implementation to serve our users’ needs better.
  • Enhanced Documentation: One of our top priorities is to improve the documentation, making it easier for developers and users to understand and utilize the SLE Server implementation. Better documentation will support existing users and new contributors who want to participate in the project.
  • Security Considerations: We published an article discussing the inherent security flaws in the SLE protocol. Our implementation, like others, is not immune to these issues. However, this is an opportunity to explore alternatives to the current transport layer, using our implementation as a testbed for potential solutions.

Way Forward

We invite the community to engage with this ongoing project. If you have further questions, feature requests, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to open an issue in the GitLab repository or contact us directly at hello@visionspace.com. Your feedback and contributions are invaluable as we improve and evolve this critical tool for space communications.
