Every great initiative starts with a spark, and VisionSpace’s inaugural Visionnaires Challenge was no exception. Designed to discover and nurture the next generation of technical talent, the first edition, “Make Pianista Sing”, asked students and young developers across Europe to tackle an ambitious, real-world problem: designing a frontend interface for Pianista, VisionSpace’s complex planning tool.
Over three intense weeks, participants navigated the full cycle of frontend development: planning, implementation, API integration, and user experience refinement. By the end, the submissions revealed not only technical skills but also creativity, design flair, and strategic thinking.
The challenge in motion
Pianista is a powerful tool, but its backend complexity presents a steep learning curve for new users. The challenge required participants to design an intuitive and responsive frontend, capable of:
- Guiding users through mission parameter input without requiring knowledge of JSON.
- Sending requests to Pianista’s backend and receiving structured plan data.
- Rendering dynamic plans as interactive Gantt charts or timelines, complete with validation and user feedback.
The competition was carefully structured to simulate professional development workflows:
- Week 1 – UI Structure & Input Design: Participants focused on designing clear, responsive forms with validation and feedback mechanisms.
- Week 2 – API Integration: The task shifted to connecting the frontend to Pianista’s backend via POST requests and displaying interactive plans.
- Week 3 – UX Polish & Final Enhancements: Competitors refined UI/UX, added optional features like zoom or filtering on the Gantt chart, and prepared deployment-ready code.
The process tested both frontend craftsmanship and the ability to solve practical problems under realistic constraints.
Judging & Criteria
Submissions were evaluated on multiple dimensions:
- Functionality: Does the interface work reliably with the Pianista backend? Are user inputs correctly processed and visualized?
- UI/UX & Usability: Is the experience intuitive, responsive, and accessible? How effectively are complex workflows simplified?
- Code Quality & Maintainability: Is the codebase clean, documented, and structured for future development?
- Creativity & Extras: Does the submission introduce unique features or novel approaches to improve user experience?
Participants submitted their projects via GitHub, providing both code and optional demo videos. This allowed the VisionSpace team to assess both technical execution and presentation quality.
Meet The Winners
After careful evaluation, three participants rose to the top, each demonstrating a unique approach to solving the challenge:
Finalist 1: Francisco Constantino
Francisco’s submission was recognized as the most complete and professional. The judges praised:
- Robustness & Intuitiveness: A clean, logical UI that guided users effortlessly through mission planning.
- Seamless API Integration: Smooth handling of async requests, loading states, and user feedback.
- Professional Polish: Fully implemented dark mode and well-thought-out form-based input for technical parameters.
The overall experience was production-ready, earning Francisco the top prize and a paid internship opportunity at VisionSpace.
Finalist 2: Mihir Kumar
Mihir’s work excelled in UI & usability, combining minimalist design with a highly professional presentation:
- Aesthetic Excellence: Dual-themed visuals with pulsing icons and a clean layout.
- Flexible Visualization: Users could explore plans in raw JSON, Mermaid diagrams, or standard views.
- Comprehensive Documentation: A detailed README and well-organized codebase highlighted attention to clarity and maintainability.
Mihir’s project demonstrated that meticulous attention to visual polish and UX can make even complex tools feel approachable.
Finalist 3: Jiahui Dai
Jiahui’s submission impressed with creativity and conceptual innovation:
- Split-Personality Interface: A toggle between “AI Chat” mode for casual users and a full-featured “Developer Mode” for technical users.
- Structured Developer Tools: Clear separation of validation, solving, conversion, and charting for developers.
- User-Centric Extras: Thoughtful visual cues and explanation bubbles guided the user through complex workflows.
Although execution had minor usability gaps, the ambition and originality secured Jiahui’s place on the podium.
Beyond a Competition: Building a Talent Pipeline
The Visionnaires Challenge was a strategic bridge between academic learning and professional practice. By exposing students and recent graduates to a real-world tool and workflow, VisionSpace not only showcased emerging talent but also created reusable technical content and strengthened its recruitment pipeline.
All participants demonstrated creativity, perseverance, and technical competence. Even submissions that faced execution hurdles brought innovative ideas to the table, proving that potential is as important as immediate results.

The success of this inaugural challenge is just the beginning. Visionnaires will continue to:
